St Cuthbert's Gospel - Part One

The St Cuthbert Gospel is the oldest surviving European book. Buried with the saint in his coffin, it was discovered 900 years later and was recently bought by the British Library.

It is a fine example of Coptic binding, and as such we took inspiration from it for our Coptic book.

Step one, pages folded to size, boards prepared with holes drilled for cover decoration and stitching.

Step two, stitching the book, unlike case bindings, Coptic bound books are sewn to the cover boards.

Step three, stitching the endbands, this protects the spine of the book.

My first book!

Here it is :)
It has taken us a few weeks to complete. There are so many more steps to making a book than I imagined! Missing one tiny detail can make all the difference from a well made book or something far more fragile and ugly!
